Omaha Tornado 1975

Tornado Watch Issued for Eastern Nebraska

47 Years After Devastating Omaha Tornado

Issued by National Weather Service's Severe Storms Forecast Center in Kansas City

The National Weather Services Severe Storms Forecast Center in Kansas City has issued a tornado watch for eastern Nebraska. The watch is in effect until 10:15 PM CDT. This comes as the region marks the 47th anniversary of the deadly tornado that struck Omaha in 1975.

On May 6, 1975, a tornado ripped through the heart of Omaha, leaving a trail of destruction. The tornado killed three people and injured dozens more. It was the first tornado to strike Omaha during the afternoon in over 100 years.

The anniversary of the 1975 tornado is a somber reminder of the deadly power of these storms. The National Weather Service urges residents to be prepared for severe weather and to take precautions when a tornado watch is issued. If you see a tornado, take shelter immediately. The safest place to be is in a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of your home. Stay away from windows and doors.
