Q1 Zhou a surprise leader and Russell a shock elimination
All the action from a dramatic qualifying session in Hungary
Budapest, Hungary - George Russell's hopes of taking pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix were dashed in qualifying when he was knocked out of Q1. The Mercedes driver failed to set a fast enough lap time and was eliminated from the session in a shock result.
Russell's elimination was not the only surprise of the session. Zhou Guanyu stunned the paddock by setting the fastest lap time in Q1. The Chinese driver has been in impressive form all weekend and he carried that through to qualifying.
Zhou's lap time was good enough to put him ahead of the likes of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. The Dutchman and the seven-time world champion will now have to start the race from further down the grid.
Hamilton did manage to beat Verstappen in the end, taking pole position for the first time since the penultimate race of the 2021 season. The Mercedes driver was just 0.044 seconds faster than Verstappen's Red Bull.
The Hungarian Grand Prix is set to be a thrilling race with a number of different drivers in contention for victory. Zhou, Hamilton, and Verstappen will all be hoping to take the win, but there are a number of other drivers who could also challenge for the podium.
