Italy strengthened their grip on top spot in UEFA Nations League Group A1 with a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Israel in Haifa on Saturday. Goals from Federico Gatti and Gianluca Scamacca secured the victory for the Azzurri, who now have a three-point lead over second-placed Netherlands with two games remaining.
Gatti and Scamacca on target as Italy dominate
Italy dominated the match from start to finish and took the lead in the 15th minute when Gatti headed home from a corner. The visitors continued to press and doubled their lead in the 35th minute when Scamacca finished off a fine team move.
Israel struggle to create chances
Israel struggled to create any clear-cut chances and rarely threatened the Italian goal. The hosts' best opportunity came in the second half when Manor Solomon fired narrowly wide from the edge of the area.
Spalletti delighted with performance
Italy coach Roberto Mancini was delighted with his team's performance. "We played very well tonight," he said. "We controlled the game from start to finish and created a lot of chances. We could have won by more but I'm very happy with the result."
Israel coach Alon Hazan disappointed
Israel coach Alon Hazan was disappointed with his team's performance. "We didn't play well enough tonight," he said. "We were too slow and didn't create enough chances. We need to improve a lot if we want to qualify for the Nations League finals."
